About the data

Local Plan Monitor brings together information currently scattered across hundreds of council websites, documents, spreadsheets and maps. Every figure links back to an official source and carries the date it was checked.

What is live now. Plan stages, timetables and adopted plans for every planning authority in England are read daily from the government's Planning Data platform, and Housing Delivery Test results from GOV.UK. Five-year land supply figures are being added council by council from their own statements. Housing site layers come next.

Our rules

  • Every data point has a source and a date. A link to the council or government document, and when we last checked it.
  • Missing is not zero. An authority with no published land supply figure is shown as "no current figure", never as zero years.
  • Dates are labelled. From the council's own timetable, a statutory/national deadline, or an estimate. Future dates in council timetables are forecasts and can slip.
  • Gaps are shown, not filled in. Where a council has not published a timetable, or it has not been updated for years, we say so. Where we have checked the council's website instead, the profile says "Local Plan Monitor research".
  • Boundaries or points, never pretend. Sites are mapped with real boundaries where councils publish them; otherwise as a labelled approximate point.
  • Assessment is not allocation. Site categories follow the council's own status, and we never imply that a site is developable because a council has a shortfall.
  • England only. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have different planning systems.
